A Pemberton District High School community service group called the ‘Change Makers' participated in the Warren River and Warren National Park camp site rubbish clean up as part of the 2007 Clean Up Australia campaign.
The Change Makers joined the Pemberton Hiking and Canoeing Company along with ‘Ribbons of Blue' to take on the challenging task of removing floating rubbish in the river using canoes. The group also did an intensive rubbish pick up throughout Draughty's Camp.
They have found that there is increasingly less rubbish in the National Park - perhaps a sign that either the anti-rubbish campaigns are working or that we are reducing ‘inherited' rubbish piles.
They also discovered that even the micro trash volume has reduced. Cigarette butts still persist around camp sites, often in little piles, and are responsible for toxins being released into the waterways. There is also a lot of abandoned fishing tackle and tangled line on river logs and rock systems.
The group did a tremendous job in cleaning the river and camp area. Well done to Pemberton District High School community service group.
