Running from 2001 to 2004, The Moonee Ponds Creek - Keep it Clean project focused on raising community awareness and providing practical solutions to reduce the amount of rubbish discharged into the Yarra River at Port Phillip Bay, Victoria.

Each year, an estimated 180 tonnes of litter enters the Moonee Ponds Creek. The majority of this is washed into the creek through the stormwater system. This rubbish not only detracts from the beauty of the Creek and surrounding recreational areas, but is a risk to marine and human health. Controlling this rubbish at its source is a priority. So a major focus of the project was to encourage community ownership and commitment to tackling the problem by conducting community events, workshops, litter reduction and education programs.
In addition, the project saw the installation of 20 gross pollutant traps, two floating litter traps, and the establishment of the Racecourse Road litter trap and Jacana Wetlands (the southern section).
Over $2.6 million was invested in the structural component of the project, with funding contributions from Environment Australia, EPA Victoria, Melbourne Water, Victorian Stormwater Action Program, the cities of Hume, Moreland, Moonee Valley and Melbourne, Ecorecycle Victoria and Melbourne Port Corporation. Community education activities were funded by the Victorian Government through the EPA as part of the Victorian Stormwater Action Program.
