By following a few simple steps we can stop plastic bags from blocking our drains and creeks, injuring our precious marine life and harming our wildlife.
The focus of the Say NO to Plastic Bags Campaign is to enable shoppers and retailers to reduce the number of plastic bags handed out at checkouts.
It's easy - just Say NO to Plastic Bags when you go shopping. Always take your reusable bags with you and use them at every shop, not just the supermarket.
Tip: buy a reusable bag that folds down so small it can go into any size of bag or pocket. Make it a habit to take it with you whenever you leave the house and that way always have a shopping bag on you.
Want to produce your own resuable bags?
Contact one of our preferred suppliers:
1. Adsun on (07) 3399 7933 or via www.adsun.com.au . Adsun provide both polypropylene and calico bags.
2. MJK Traders on (02) 8814 8111. MJK Traders provide jute and calico bags in a range of colours.
It doesn't matter where your business is located - reusable bags can be delivered anywhere in Australia. Please mention that Clean Up Australia referred you.
New materials for retailers
Clean Up Australia provides a website and suite of materials to help small business retailers choose plastic bag alternatives. The website was developed in partnership with the Federal Department of the Environment and Heritage and the Australian Retailers Association and can be viewed at www.noplasticbags.org.au
Clean Up Australia is inviting local communities to help drive change. Local councils, community groups and schools are always great ambassadors for Clean Up activities. It's easy to run a 'bag swap', design your own reusable bags and encourage local retailers to come on board. We can provide promotional materials, media assistance and advice on activities that work.
Support for the campaign has been very positive with the Federal Government, nearly every supermarket chain around Australia and Stockland Shopping Centres signing up. In addition non-supermarket businesses such as Bakers Delight and Caltex have also joined the campaign.
And of course use a resuable bag as often as you can. Look around for a design that you like most. Myer's mygreenbag is a great example.
