LEAVE SPACE FOR YOUR WASTE

    Leave Space for your Waste

There are no waste management facilities in many remote areas of the Kimberley.

If you are visiting or travelling through the Kimberley region be prepared to carry your waste. Help us preserve this unique part of Australia for past and future generations.

Follow these simple steps to help minimise your waste:

    • When shopping for your trip choose products with minimal packaging.
    • Re-package food in containers and pre-cook meals if possible.
    • Allow space in your vehicle or trailer to stow your waste.
    • Separate and compact your waste.
    • Crush aluminium cans and plastic bottles.
    • Flatten cardboard boxes and carry a sealable bag or bin for food scraps and odourous materials.
    • Camp at managed campsites where possible.
    • Where toilet facilities are not available, bury human waste in cat holes at least 20cm deep and at least 100m from waterways.
    • Carry a strong shovel.
    • Carry extra garbage bags.

    About the Campaign

"The camp site is cleared, the kids are in the car, we're ready to go. So what we do with that smelly, dripping bag of rubbish?"

The Leave Space for your Waste campaign will help campers and independent travellers manage and carry their waste while camping in remote areas where there are no bins or toilets.

Malcolm Douglas has been making documentaries in the Kimberley and northern Australia for 30 years. He is a well respected figure among travellers and four wheel drive enthusiasts and is the face of this promotion.

The campaign will include TV ads, signage, printed literature & a traveller waste reduction kit.
