
Inspiring children to care for the environment is a vital part of Clean Up Australia. Since 1992 Schools Clean Up Day has allowed school students to participate in Clean Up Australia as part of their school community.
The 2010 Schools Clean Up Day saw students from more than 2100 schools take part in the event.

Clean Up Australia chairman and founder, Ian Kiernan AO, visited Fiona McCrossin, winner of the NSW 2009 Green Teacher Award and teacher at North Sydney Boys High School, to view a “plastic bottle tree” constructed by students.
Around 25 North Sydney Boys High students were joined by students from schools in North Sydney to hear Ian Kiernan congratulate Fiona McCrossin for her efforts in establishing an environmental network of local schools.
Students from North Sydney Boys High waste committee spoke about their plan to phase out plastic bottles at the school before taking guests to view a tree constructed from plastic bottles in the schoolyard.

Rain held off for Carlton Public School in Melbourne who welcomed Minister for Education the Hon. Bronwyn Pike MP. The school was also joined by Councilor Cathy Oke from the City of Melbourne as well as some parents and volunteers from the community. 893 pieces of rubbish were collected.

Kaleen Public School was joined by Member for Ginninderra, Mary Porter MLA in their school clean-up.

Woodlupine Primary School in Forestfield welcomed the Minister for Environment and Youth, the Hon. Donna Faragher MP to their school. Students retrieved 3 shopping trolleys and a bicycle amongst other rubbish during their clean-up. The event was such a success that teacher Bev Henderson reports they intend to hold regular clean-ups from now on!
Do you know a teacher whose work to improve the environment inspires the whole community?
The Green Teacher Award seeks to celebrate and recognise teachers who have been a positive influence on students by carrying out environmental projects within their school community. Nominate them for the 2010 Green Teacher Award.
A Green Teacher will be selected from each state/territory to take a 3 day trip to Sanyo's Solar Ark in Japan. An overall winner will be selected to win additional items for their school.
Closing date for all entries is 5pm (AEST) Friday 19th March 2010
