THE ALPS ENVIRONMENT

    The fragile Alps environment

The Alpine National Park has an extremely unique environment and is one of the most ecologically diverse ecosystems in Australia, containing thousands of flora and fauna species and acting as a source point for 10% of Victoria's stream flows

Some facts about the Alps demonstrate just how diverse the environment is and why we must protect the Alps:

    • The Alpine National Park has 975 indigenous plant species and 339 indigenous animal species making it once of the most diverse regions in Australia.
    • Some 300 threatened flora and fauna species are found in the Alps, including several species found nowhere else.
    • 23 ecological communities found in the Alps are listed as threatened.
    • Twelve species, including the Bogong Daisy-bush and Silky Daisy, are not found anywhere else in the world.
    • Alpine environments are rare in Australia, covering less than 1% of the continent.
    • Alpine mossbeds when healthy guarantee the delivery of quality water to the catchments - over the years they have been severely damaged.
    • Threatened species such as the Smoky Mouse, Broad-toothed Rat, Powerful Owl, Spotted Tree Frog and She-Oak Skink are found in the Alps National Park.
