WEST AUSTRALIANS URGED TO TAKE TO THEIR STREETS

West Australians urged to take to their streets

Media Release- 17 August 2010

Ian Kiernan AO, founder and Chairman of Clean Up Australia, has called on communities in northern WA to take to their streets for the 2010 Great Northern Clean Up.

With just two weeks to go before registrations close, Clean Up says now is the time to look around the neighbourhood and find those areas that need a clean up.

The Great Northern Clean Up was created in 2009, after feedback that weather made it difficult for northern communities to participate in the national Clean Up Australia Day on the first weekend in March.

Mr Kiernan said, “Community support and feedback after the first Great Northern Clean Up was so positive we’ve made it an annual event.

‘Over nine tons of rubbish was removed by the community at eight sites in northern WA last year.  My challenge to the people of northern WA is let’s beat last year’s tally.

“We’ve already had a number of sites registered, but I’m sure everybody knows an area in their neighbourhood where there’s more work to be done.“ Mr Kiernan said.

“The tourist season is drawing to a close, so this is the perfect chance to clear up accumulated rubbish in the community before the big wet kicks in” Mr Kiernan said.

The 2010 Great Northern Clean Up will be held on the weekend of September 11 and 12, and anyone can register a Clean Up site or volunteer by visiting www.cleanup.org.au or by calling 1800 CUA DAY (1800 282 329).

The registration cut off date for 2010 is August 29.
