CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA SUPPORTS VICTORIAN GREENS ON A 10C REFUND ON BOTTLES AND CANS

Clean Up Australia supports Victorian Greens on a 10c refund on bottles and cans

Media Release - 15 June 2011

Clean Up Australia strongly supports Green MLC Colleen Hartland’s move to introduce a 10c deposit on drink bottles, cans and cartons in Victoria – a Bill that was tabled this morning.

Ian Kiernan AO, Chairman and founder of Clean Up, points to South Australia as evidence of the success of this kind of scheme.

“We have seen the success of a Container Deposit System for over 30 years in South Australia. SA enjoys a recycling rate of bottles and cans between 75-85 per cent, while the rate in other states is less than half this,” said Mr Kiernan.

“With NT introducing a scheme later this year, Victoria has the opportunity to join the strong leadership of these states and territories and demonstrate that it won’t wait for the Federal Government to act. We need waste management solutions now, and the Victorian Greens are proposing a solution that has been proven to work.”

Colleen Hartland has listened to the Victorians – who demonstrated their concern for the environment in an October 2006 Newspoll that indicated that 94% of them support deposits on drink containers. Now the rest of the Victorian Government has the chance to show that they too are listening to the people who elected them.

Data from Clean Up Australia Day 2010 indicates that the introduction of a Container Deposit Scheme in Victoria would reduce the total amount of rubbish in the environment by 28% and would prevent more than 2,000 plastic bottles alone from entering the Victorian environment each year.

“Our natural environment is too precious to not act. Introduction of 10c refund on bottles and cans will reduce rubbish in Victoria’s environment significantly. It will also create jobs in new recycling facilities and reduce the costs for kerbside recycling because less recyclables in the household bin means fewer costs for collecting them,” said Mr Kiernan.

Clean Up Australia stands strong behind Colleen Hartland’s Bill and urges the Victorian Government to do the same.
