If you don't Clean Up Australia, who will?

Register local sites now for Clean Up Australia Day 2009

Australians generate almost 32 million tonnes of rubbish each year – that’s about 1.5 tonnes from each and every one of us and, per person, ranks us as the second highest producers of waste in the world.

Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO today urged our community to get involved and reduce the 16 million tonnes of rubbish that is either being dumped in the environment or sent to landfill where it cannot be recycled.

“We are pretty good at recycling but half of the rubbish we produce is still heading to landfill, which we are fast running out of space for, or is polluting our natural environment,” Mr Kiernan said.

“We can all do something about it.”

Registrations are now open for the 19th Clean Up Australia Day on March 1st, 2009. Anyone can register a Clean Up site just by visiting www.cleanup.org.au or by calling 1800 CUA DAY (1800 282 329).

Mr Kiernan encouraged people to register a local polluted area, particularly rivers, creeks and harbours.

“Get a group of mates together, your community group or sports club and register a Clean Up site today,” Mr Kiernan said.

“Clean Up Australia Day is the perfect time to get out and lend a hand to clean up your local environment. It is also a great way to kick-start simple but effective initiatives in your home to clean up the environment all year round.

“Even though recycling and reuse rates are improving, the amount of waste each Australian generates is increasing due to an increase in packaging and disposable products.

“We can all do our bit to make a difference. After all, if you don’t help Clean Up Australia, who will?”
