RECORD NUMBER OF CLEAN UP SITES REGISTERED NOW CALLING ON VOLUNTEERS

Record number of Clean Up Sites registered now calling on volunteers

Media Release - 5 September 2011

This year is set to be the Greatest Northern Clean Up ever, with more than 140 sites registered.

Ian Kiernan AO, founder and Chairman of Clean Up Australia, said the growth of the Great Northern Clean Up reveals the abundant community spirit and environmental commitment of northern Queenslanders.

“Councils, businesses, and leaders in the local community have all done their bit by stepping up and registering sites – and I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the community get behind the event by turning out with gloves and bags over the weekend of 9-11 September.

“In 2010, more than 4,600 Queenslanders removed an estimated 196 tonnes of waste from 89 sites. This year, we have over 100 sites registered in Queensland already.

“Clean Up events are about doing great things for the environment, but they’re more than that – they’re also about getting into the community, meeting your neighbours and working together to make your shared spaces user friendly. It’s a very rewarding experience.”

The Great Northern Clean Up was created in 2009, after feedback that weather made it difficult for northern communities to participate in the national Clean Up Australia Day on the first weekend in March.

The 2011 Great Northern Clean Up will be held on the weekend of September 9 to 11.  Anyone can volunteer by visiting www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au or by calling 1800 CUA DAY (1800 282 329).
