RECYCLING ANSWER TO NSW WASTE PROBLEMS

Recycling answer to NSW waste problems

Media Release - 21 March 2010

Introducing incentives to increase recycling, such as refunds for beverage containers, is critical if we are to deal with the state’s waste problems, Clean Up Australia said today.

Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO said the Public Review Landfill Capacity and Demand report released today, which shows that NSW is fast running out of landfill space, highlights the need for immediate and serious action.

“It’s time to stop sweeping our rubbish problems under the rug” Mr Kiernan said.

“We need to be introducing measures that encourage recycling and we need to be introducing them now.

“The simple answer to the problem is to improve recycling, which will mean less rubbish heading to our already strained landfill sites.

“Public place recycling, introducing a 10 cent refund on beverage containers -there are many simple solutions that will make a big difference to the amount of rubbish heading straight to landfill.

“The government needs to get serious about tackling the state, and the country’s, burgeoning waste issues.

“We’ve got to turn our focus to recovery rather than dumping in landfill.

“We’ve got the solutions sitting there waiting to be implemented. We now just need the government to stand up and ensure they’re delivered.
