REGISTER NOW TO CLEAN UP THE MURRAY RIVER NEAR YOU

Media Release 23 January, 2009

Now is the time to register a site to clean up your favourite part of the Murray River.

Clean Up Australia and Parks Victoria have teamed up to lead the way with the introduction of the Clean Up the Murray River campaign and we want you to help!

By registering to clean up a site nearby you will be contributing to a huge community effort to remove litter from along the Murray River and surrounds and to build awareness about how to protect the River for the future.

The community Clean Up is being help on Sunday 22 February 2009.

There will be official Clean Up sites in Echuca, Cohuna and Cobram, but we want hundreds more people to register to clean up sites from Mildura right through to Wodonga.

To get involved, go to www.cleanup.org.au now to find or register a Clean up the Murray River site near you.

“The Murray River is such a popular and iconic waterway but unfortunately that popularity has led to tonnes of rubbish being dumped in and around the river. Not only does it look unsightly, it is also harming our local wildlife,” Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO said.

“We know the local community is passionate about the river, so we’re hoping to turn that passion into action on the 22nd of February and get as many people as possible out to help us clean up the river,” he said.

If you know a location near you that you think needs cleaning up, then now is the time register your site and get together with others so you can make a difference to the mighty Murray.

“For the river to continue to be an attractive and enjoyable place to visit, as well as environmentally healthy, it needs to be litter free,” Mr Kiernan said.

Get involved today – go to www.cleanup.org.au to register!
