SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS AT HARRIS FARM MARKETS AND HELP DO YOUR BIT

Say NO to plastic bags at Harris Farm Markets and help do your bit

Media Release - 4 June 2010

From World Environment Day on Saturday 5 June 2010, the Harris Farm Markets Aussie Trust will donate 5c to Clean Up Australia every time someone says ‘NO’ to plastic bags – with a view to collecting over $60,000 for the leading environmental not-for-profit organisation.

Local shoppers can truly make a difference – as the store with the best results will also have the opportunity to choose a deserving local environment project that will then be awarded a $10,000 grant in support of their work.

Customers will be educated on the initiative throughout Harris Farm Markets’ stores, with the aim of reducing the number of plastic bags distributed by over 1 million in six months.

“The Harris Farm Markets Aussie Trust is constantly looking for ways to give something back to our community – and reducing the impact of our business on the environment is always front of mind. We’re very pleased to announce our partnership with such an admirable organisation such as Clean Up Australia, allowing our stores, our staff and our shoppers to get involved!” said Tristan Harris, General Manager Buying & Marketing at Harris Farm Markets.

According to the Department of the Environment, Australians used 3.9 billion lightweight single use high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bags in 2007, with 2.96 billion of these emanating from supermarkets.

Chairman and Founder of Clean Up Australia, Ian Kiernan AO, welcomes the partnership with Harris Farm Markets and urges local residents to say ‘NO’ to plastic bags when shopping in their stores.

“Clean Up Australia has been committed to getting rid of plastic bags since 2001 – and since that time we’ve helped decrease usage significantly. Overall, plastic bag numbers have been reduced by 45% in less than a decade, but there's still more work to be done. With partners like Harris Farm Markets on board, Australians can help make a difference every time we shop!”
