TIMELY LAUNCH OF REVITALISED SCHOOLS CLIMATE KIT FOR WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Timely launch of revitalised Schools Climate Kit for World Environment Day

Media Release - 1 June 2011

Coinciding with World Environment Day, Clean Up Australia is launching a revitalised resource Kit to help teachers include environmental issues into their lessons all year round.

The Kit includes lesson plans and suggested activities on topics including climate change, water, energy, waste and recycling.

Clean Up’s relationship with schools started with Schools Clean Up Day in 1992. Since then it has worked with teachers and students to provide a series of activity based tools that are practical, topical and timely.

In 2008, Clean Up introduced the Green Teacher Award, recognising the commitment of teachers to educational development and opportunities.
The revitalised Schools Climate Kit is a further outcome of that initiative.

Developed in partnership with teachers, many of the lesson plans have now been linked back to the draft national curriculum. Geared towards primary schools students, each plan includes activities that are practical, engaging and fun, tailored to age groups and learning stages.

Through participation, students develop an understanding of the importance of environmental issues, and how their own every-day actions contribute to global impacts.

Ian Kiernan AO, Chairman and founder of Clean Up Australia, firmly believes that educating kids about the environment is crucial to the ongoing health of our planet.

“It’s great to see that environmental education is being incorporated in syllabuses these days – it’s a big change from when I was growing up,” said Mr Kiernan.

“Clean Up’s Schools Climate Kit – a set of accessible, practical class plans – will assist teachers enormously.”

Accompanying the Schools Climate Kit is the Clean Up the River game – a fun, interactive web-based game designed to stimulate primary school aged kids to learn more about the impact of rubbish on their local river systems.
