YOUR SMALL CHANGE WILL MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE TO THE CLEAN UP

Your small change will make a big difference to the clean up

Media Release - 23 March 2011

This year Clean Up Australia Day celebrated 21 years of success, with 7,479 sites registered across Australia, and more than half a million volunteers getting their hands dirty to clean up local parks, beaches and bushland. However, the clean up effort has just started for communities still affected by Australia’s recent natural disasters.

For anyone who missed out in getting involved on 6 March, it’s not too late to do your bit – by making a donation to Clean Up Australia you can be part of the ongoing clean up effort.

Damaged communities are looking to Clean Up Australia for help as they register more Clean Up Sites with the organisation each day. However, the unprecedented number of sites registered on Clean Up Australia Day means clean up supplies have become seriously depleted. And with plenty more work to be done, we are in desperate need for more resources to be able to support these Australians.

Clean Up Australia’s community kit provides everything a community needs to get started with their clean up.  Each kit costs the organisation $40.

Ian Kiernan AO, Chairman and founder spoke about the day “If you couldn’t join us on the Clean Up Australia Day it’s not too late. Everyone can make today their first day of action. Our work is far from done and communities still tirelessly cleaning up need our help. By donating any amount you can, you can help provide a clean up kit to a community suffering in the aftermath of those terrible natural disasters. The kit will include bags, gloves and other equipment for volunteers to help clean up and fix up the damaged areas.”

“The legacy of Clean Up Australia is proven action and behavioural change. This is the year when we need to seriously think about how we live and change our relationship with our environment. We need to continue to work as a community to make every day a Clean Up Day.”

Over its 21 year history volunteers have transformed the nation on Clean Up Australia Day. In total, they have devoted more than 24 million hours to help the environment by removing an estimated 253,954 tonnes of rubbish. Help us continue the success for future generations, please support Australia’s largest community event by going to www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au or donating at your local Commonwealth Bank branch. All contributions big or small are greatly appreciated.

Clean Up Australia is a not-for-profit organisation and is not government funded. It relies on sponsors and donors to supply resources that allow it to continue providing free bags, gloves and other equipment to volunteers.
