The community’s help is needed to reduce the numbers of carp in the Barwon River and halt the damage the fish cause, Clean Up Australia and Parks Victoria urged today.
Registrations for the 10th Catch-A-Carp-Day on the Barwon River on Saturday 18 October are now available to download at www.cleanup.org.au or www.parkweb.vic.gov.au.
Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO will be among hundreds of local residents and visitors expected to turn out on the day to help rid the Barwon River of one of Australia’s most prominent pests – the carp.
“Carp are an introduced species that destroy the habitat native fish rely on for survival. For everyone who loves and enjoys the Barwon River, your help is needed to rid a menace that, unfortunately, we are all responsible for creating,” Mr Kiernan said.
Other impacts the carp are responsible for include:
· Reduced water quality due to carp uprooting vegetation and stirring up river sediments
· Native aquatic plants are eaten, reducing food available for native fish species
· River banks can be undermined and eroded due to carp’s feeding habits.
The event is supported by local business, community groups, as well as Clean Up Australia and Parks Victoria.
“We’re hoping the whole Geelong community come along and help us protect this magnificent waterway. Not only will you be helping to protect the Barwon River Parklands, but it’s also a great family day out and a great way to learn about the environment, with heaps of free give-aways and prizes to be won,” Barwon River Parklands Project Manager Andrew McKinnon said.
There will be a range of activities for the whole family to enjoy on the day including kids fishing clinics, marine conservation workshops, prize draws and a free bbq.
Entry is free and the fish-out will run from 7.30am to 2pm at the Barwon Valley Park, Barwon River, Barrabool Rd, Geelong. All participants must register at the registration marquee, open from 7.30am.
