Sydney: When environmental campaigners and authors, Kim McKay and Jenny Bonnin asked Tim Flannery to provide the cover quote for their book, True Green….100 Everyday Ways You Can Contribute to a Healthier Planet, they knew the Australian public had been influenced by the scientist’s outstanding advocacy work on climate change.
Now as Australian of the Year, Tim Flannery’s role as a major catalyst for environmental change in Australia and around the world has been officially recognized, they said.
“Tim is the most significant Australian of the past year and his influence will be long-lasting. His seminal book, The Weather Makers helped explain the issues of global warming and climate change to average Australians and has importantly influenced our government leaders to create positive change,” Kim McKay, who is also the co-founder of Clean Up Australia said.
“It’s just great that we can now return the favour and congratulate Tim on this well-deserved award,” McKay said.
“We were ecstatic that Tim supported our work with True Green by saying that:
Every Australian household, and our environment, will benefit from this essential, practical guide”, she said.
True Green (ABC Books $19.95) was released at the end of 2006 and is selling around the nation as Australians seek more practical information about what they can do to minimise their environmental footprint.
Coincidentally, Tim Flannery joins another Australian of the Year on the cover of True Green. Ian Kiernan, AO, the 1994 Australian of the Year and chairman and founder of Clean Up Australia provided the foreword to the book.
“There have only been three Australians of the Year from the environmental sector and to have two of them on the cover of True Green is quite the daily double,” she said.
