The founder of Clean Up Australia today skippered Sanyo Maris to victory in the 414-nautical mile Lord Howe Island Yacht Race. Sanyo Maris becoming the oldest yacht ever to win an ocean passage race in Australia.
The 50-year-old wooden-hulled yacht, skippered by Ian Kiernan AO, took out the handicap honours, crossing the finish line shortly after 11 am this morning.
Designed by the late Alan Payne for yachting legend Jack Earl, Sanyo Maris is the oldest yacht ever to win a major long ocean race in Australian waters.
The crew of the Sanyo Maris included Tiare Tomaszewski, grand-daughter of Jack Earl and co-owner of Sanyo Maris, Martin Farrand, Chris Oh, Brad Bishop and David Hayes.
Mr Kiernan said the win is a highlight of his ocean racing career.
"Today's win is an amazing honour. The crew were outstanding and to win a race like this on such an historic vessel makes this all the more special," he said.
"There aren't many 50-year-olds anywhere with the skill and reliability of Sanyo Maris.
"Now we're looking towards the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race where we'll celebrate the 50th anniversary of her launching by proudly sailing her home on what will be my 13th Sydney to Hobart."My work with Clean Up Australia has meant I've had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time on Lord Howe Island, so to win here is certainly very special."
