Media Release - 21 September 2009
With just two weeks to go, Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO is urging residents to register their sites for the first ever Great Northern Clean Up, 3-4 October.
Mr Kiernan said that with the tourist season drawing to an end and with the wet season just around the corner, there are more reasons than ever to get involved.
“We all know of areas in our neighbourhood that could do with a bit of a clean up and with just two weeks to go until the big event, now’s the time to make sure they’re registered,” Mr Kiernan said.
“As tourists leave the area unfortunately they also tend to leave behind pockets of rubbish. When the rain sets in, the rubbish left around will make its way straight into our waterways.
“Here’s our chance to get out and lend a hand to make sure we don’t have chip packets, plastic bottles and other rubbish items making a mess of our environment.
Anyone can register a Clean Up site or to volunteer on 3rd and 4th of October just by
visiting www.cleanup.org.au or by calling 1800 CUA DAY (1800 282 329).
“The community asked for a clean up that takes place at a practical time of year for those living in the Northern parts of Australia and now we’ve got it.
“I’m very confident the community in Northern Australia will turn out in big numbers across the inaugural Great Northern Clean Up weekend and help us clean up our iconic areas.”
To register a Great Northern Clean Up site or to volunteer go to www.cleanup.org.au or freecall 1800 CUA DAY (1800 282 329).
