Media Release - 6 March, 2009
Volunteers are still needed in the lead up the Clean Up Australia Day this Sunday 1 March.
Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO said it’s not too late to get involved in Clean Up Australia Day, with volunteer registrations still open at www.cleanup.org.au.
“Australians are facing many challenges at the moment, so it’s more important than ever that we join together and do something positive for our nation,” Mr Kiernan said.
“Natural disasters such as flooding and bushfires often turn up illegally dumped rubbish like vehicles and other items. What better time to get out and help clean up those areas than on Clean Up Australia Day.
“Last year we had over 800,000 volunteers nationally, we’re hoping for even more this year. We know there are thousands of tonnes of plastic bottles, chip packets, cigarette butts and other items harming our environment and our wildlife. Now’s the time to clean it up.
“Simply go onto the website www.cleanup.org.au search for a site near you, register as a volunteer and turn up on Sunday with gloves, a hat, sturdy shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen ready to help make a difference.
“Let’s get out and lend a hand this Sunday 1 March. It doesn’t matter how old or young you are, everyone can help to make a positive difference to Australia’s environment by getting involved. After all, if you don’t help Clean Up Australia, who will?
