About Clean Up Australia Day

Councils help the Clean Up Australia Day campaign in many ways and their support is critical to its success.  There are many things that councils can do to support the Clean Up Australia Day campaign – every action is necessary and contributes to the success of the campaign!

A council guide has been developed and is designed to give councils all of the information needed to not only get involved in Clean Up Australia Day, but also take every opportunity to maximise the event for the benefit of councils and the community.

Why should councils get involved in Clean Up Australia Day?

Clean Up Australia Day is Australia's largest and most popular community based environmental event!  It inspires and works with communities to clean up, fix up and conserve the Australian environment.

Clean Up Australia Day also provides individuals with the opportunity to make a practical and worthwhile contibution to their environment.  It continues to grow from strength to strength because of the generous support of numerous individuals, businesses, community groups and councils throughout Australia.

The primary reason most councils get involved in Clean Up Australia Day is to engage the local communiyt and create positive outcomes for the environment.  Supporting the campaign can also benefit your council by:

  • Raising the Mayor's/Lord Mayor's profile through city/town wide media coverage in local print, television and radio
  • Helping remove substantial amounts of rubbish from bushland areas and reserves not regularly serviced by council local asset services
  • Helping to identify problematic illegal dumping sites
  • Helping identify problematic areas
  • Supporting established council and community group links such as catchment groups
  • Conveying current council message with Clean Up Australia media releases and materials
  • Improving the state of numerous iconic metropolitan parks, reserves and waterways
  • Recognition within the community that council is supportive of the nation's largest community based environmental event

What can councils do to support Clean Up Australia day?

There are many things that your council can do to support the campaign - every action is neccessary and contributes to the success of the campaign.

You can act as a liaison between Clean Up Australia, site supervisors, volunteers and their communities, manage your own sites on a local level, and/or most importantly, facilitate the collection of rubbish from sites in your area.

More specifically, councils can provide support for Clean Up Australia Day by:

  • Helping to identify appropriate sites for Clean Up events
  • Organising your own council Clean Up sites and registering them wiht Clean Up Australia
  • Collecting rubbish from each Clean Up site registered in the council area
  • Collecting recyclables from Clean Up sites
  • Providing skip bins to registered sites
  • Nominating trouble-shooter(s) to support local Clean Up events on Day
  • Helping to distribute Clean Up kits to site organisers or acting as a pick-up point for the Kits
  • Promoting Clean Up Australia Day through newsletters, advertising, local media, etc
  • Providing additional materials such as gloves, safety vests, and bags to site organisers
