Parsley Bay came under the spotlight when it was found that stormwater runoff, garden debris and large amounts of sediment were choking the waterway. If the Bay was to return to its former splendour the only solution was to remove nearly 1,300 tonnes of fine black sediment that had built up over 80 years.
Running from August 2000 to December 2003, the project improved the environment of Parsley Bay through the removal of the existing fine black sediment and the reinstatement of an even, gently sloping more natural profile. This was no mean feat - buffer zones to protect seagrass beds needed to be established around the project works and seagrass which extended into the works area had to be successfully transplanted. This now allows for better flushing of the bay and improved overall water quality.
Financial contributions to the project were received from the Commonwealth Government's Coast and Clean Seas Program, Woollahra Council, our Clean Up Friends through Community and Workplace Giving, Friends of Parsley Bay and the NSW EPA.
