THE KIMBERLEY SAYS NO TO PLASTIC BAGS

Say NO to Plastic Bags in the Kimberley

39 Kimberley small retailers have signed up for the Kimberley Say NO to Plastic Bags project. This equates to a potential reduction of around 2 million plastic bags per year going into Kimberley land fill sites and the environment.

A survey conducted in the early stages of this project revealed that around 50% of remote community stores were already plastic bag free. With the help of this project all of the larger Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley are now plastic bag free.

This is encouraging, but there is still a long way to go to eliminate plastic shopping bags completely. This project will continue with new initiatives to help small retailers reduce their plastic bag output and educate consumers to bring their own bags.

    Financial incentives for Kimberley businesses

These businesses have been sent 400 FREE unique ‘Clean Up the Kimberley' re-usable shopping bags plus a free retailers kit.
    The free retailer's kit includes:

    • point-of-sale materials
    • posters
    • check-out tags
    • stickers
    • information on the impacts of plastic bags on our environment
    • contact details of reputable re-usable bag suppliers
    • environmental ratings information on plastic bag alternatives

Participating stores are encouraged to sell the bags for a recommended price of $2.00 each and reinvest the proceeds in their own re-usable bags or other environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic bags.

16 remote aboriginal community stores have successfully implemented the initiative and many are already developing designs to be printed on their own unique re-usable bags.
