Our Earth Foundation’s Clean Up the Baltic - August 2008

The "Clean Up the Baltic" initiative is organised by Clean Up the World member, Our Earth Foundation from Poland. Its aim is to build a sense of responsibility among Europeans living in the Baltic basin by making people aware of the problem caused by polluting the Baltic and demonstrating the consequences of pollution of inner land waters (lakes and rivers).

The Baltic sea shares its shores with nine countries (Poland , Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia  Lithuania) and more than 20 larger rivers flow into it, of which nearly half are in Poland. Communal sewerage, industrial waste, chemical fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides, detergents and contamination caused by litter of an area of 1,700,000 sq km inhabited by 80 million people finds its way into the Baltic.

Because the Baltic Sea is semi-enclosed it has very poor water flow into the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, it takes about 30 years for waste introduced into the Baltic to "flow out" of it.

Our Earth Foundation realises that the sea can't be "cleaned up " in a day, however they hope to rise awareness of this priceless gift of Nature that is shared and to encourage everyone to look after it on an everyday basis.

Clean Up the World members in the region can choose to register local cleanup activities as part of Clean Up the Baltic 2008. Please let Our Earth Foundation know if you would like to be involved, what you are planning to do and send a short report with photos after the event to them and Clean Up the World.

As ecosystems and bio-regions transcend national borders Clean Up the World and its member organisations are increasingly collaborating with other organisations to conduct regional initiatives.
