MOST POLLUTED SITES

The 'Total Rubbish Distribution' chart identifies the most polluted sites surveyed according to number of rubbish items found.

In 2006, Shops / Malls appeared the ‘most polluted’ sites surveyed, according to number of rubbish items found on average. The small sample size and the large number of cigarette butts found at these sites increases the average number of items to stand out with 1255 items per site.

All other site types were relatively consistent, with between 280 and 412 average items at each of the site categories. There was a significant decrease in the average number of rubbish items across all sites, at 366 in 2006 (507 in 2005, 592 in 2004).

The 'Site Rubbish Composition' chart details the proportions of different types of rubbish removed from each site.

This year, 'other' sites and school grounds recorded the highest proportion of plastics.

Public Bushland and ‘other’ sites showed a higher proportion of metals per site compared to other site types.

Shops / Malls and Outdoor transport appeared to show a high composition of miscellaneous items, both within the site type and in comparison to other site types. For a more detailed analysis of rubbish distribution across different site categories, see 'Number of Surveyed Items by Site Category' table downloadable from the 'Surveyed Sites' page.
