REPLACE THAT DISPOSABLE CUP

The Problem

Over 3 billion disposable hot drink cups and lids are handed across Australian counters in cafes and other take-away outlets every year.

Most are never recycled.

People don't want to carry a dirty single use cup - so they look to discard it as soon as possible. Many end up as rubbish on our streets, at transport stops, left at park benches or squashed or stashed in crevices. As they tear or break up they end up being washed down drains with storm water where they become mistaken for food by marine-life.

Clean Up Australia volunteers report that 5.1% of all paper they remove is 'hot beverage' cups.

Producing a single use hot drink cup is resource intensive. And sadly , because it is single use the best outcome is it generally ends up in landfill. Because even the cups we think we are recycling are often rejected.
