It's War on Waste with BYO Friday!

The War on Waste is coming back to ABC TV! And Clean Up Australia is supporting Responsible Cafes and War on Waste in a collective effort to choose to reuse!

Step up and BYO your reusable coffee cups, cutlery, water bottles and containers every Friday...

The COVID-19 pandemic saw a decline in the use of reusable items but it's time to get back on track. So don’t forget to BYO every Friday so we can continue fighting the war against waste and get ready for the launch of the third season of the ABC's agenda-setting TV series!

Why do we need to BYO?

As plastic ban legislation changes, so should we! We need reusables to become a habitual practice in our everyday life. Let's all make an effort to actively seek alternatives to single-use products, reduce unnecessary plastic packaging and make sustainable swaps.

Every year billions of takeaway coffee cups and lids are discarded in Australia, making them one of the most used single-use plastic items. The vast majority end up in landfill and many are littered and become plastic pollution. Many people think disposable coffee cups are recyclable, but they’re usually lined with plastic and most end up in landfill.

Australia is home to the world's most expensive bottled water, and incredibly, we have the second highest consumption rate per capita! Although most Australians can access extremely good, safe drinking water straight from the tap, on average, each Australian spent about $580 on bottled water in 2021, making it one of the most common and expensive single-use purchases in the country.

The new three-part series of War on Waste aims to reveal the truth behind the spin by answering the most-asked questions about what to do with waste at home and provide straightforward solutions to stem the waste tide.

Planet advocate and prankster Craig Reucassel will once again look at the mindset change we need to fix the problems, setting new challenges for corporations, councils, and communities that’ll be followed up throughout the series, as well as public stunts to show the impact of our consumer habits.

Topics include the impact of microplastics on our health, the devastating environmental impact of our obsession with fast fashion; the link between food waste and climate change; and solutions for the current crisis in soft plastics recycling.

On the flip side, Reucassel will meet the waste warriors who are rethinking the future of global waste issues with innovative recycling solutions for our plastic, food, and fashion waste.

War on Waste will premiere July 25 at 8.30pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

Are you ready to step up and #BYOFriday? Show us! Remember, thousands of small steps make a big difference - together we can all be part of the solution.

We don't need a handfull of Aussies doing zero waste perfectly; we need millions of Aussies doing it imperfectly...
