Advocacy Projects

We are proud to be a voice for our national community of volunteers, advocating on their behalf for policy reforms, programs and government investment that enable litter and waste prevention.

We also educate and empower communities to adopt sustainable behaviours – focusing on waste avoidance, reduction and improved recycling – to help protect our environment.

Our advocacy work prioritises the higher-level waste management actions: Avoid, Reduce, Reuse, Repair and Recycle. These principles are essential as we work to transition Australia to a circular economy – where there is no such thing as waste, and everything is a resource. In a circular economy, products are designed for longevity and recovery, minimising landfill and litter, and creating a sustainable, waste-free future.

The Laptop Initiative

We partnered with the Laptop Initiative on a national campaign to redirect usable laptops from landfill – and into the hands of people who need them.

Container Deposit Schemes

Through policy submissions, consultation and recommendations, we have been instrumental in the establishment of Container Deposit Schemes across the country.

Plastics and Packaging

We are committed to a strong international Global Plastics Treaty as well as policy reform at a domestic level. We advocate for a mandated Extended Producer Recycling (EPR) scheme for packaging in Australia to ensure plastic and other packaging is designed from the outset for recollection at end-of-life. Litter Report

Clean Up Australia’s annual Litter Report is a snapshot of litter removed by volunteers during a financial year. Since 1991, the Litter Report has proven to be an invaluable resource in identifying trends in the types and spread of litter throughout Australia. It continues to demonstrate the importance of refusing, reducing, re-using and recycling rubbish.

Based on litter levels in waste streams, our Litter Data collected via Citizen Science has consistently been used to inform and guide government recommendations.
