Food Waste

Over 7.6 million tonnes of food wasted in Australia every year – which equates to around 312kg per person per year. That’s enough edible food to fill Melbourne’s Cricket Ground ten times!

With immense food waste on the one hand, and 21% of Australians being severely affected by food insecurity on the other, it’s time to tackle food waste.

You can help reduce food waste in Australia by meal planning, shopping savvy, loving your leftovers, growing your own, redeeming eating out deals and composting rather than putting scraps in landfill.

The Problem

Household food waste makes up 2.5 million tonnes of the overall total amount of food wasted nationally. In Australia, reducing food waste could save the average family up to $3,800 per year.

Approximately 92% of household food waste still goes directly to landfill, where it anaerobically decomposes, expelling methane – a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.

Staggeringly, food waste accounts for 3% of Australia’s annual Greenhouse Gas emissions – substances in the Earth’s atmosphere that trap heat and contribute to global warming.

What can you do?

If we all do our bit, we can have a huge impact on the amount of food wasted and create a more sustainable future. There are several ways to combat food wastage in the home and the key is developing good habits.
