FAQ’s

How do I organise a Business Clean Up?

It’s easy, fun and rewarding when you organise a Business Clean Up event. Follow our 3 simple steps here.

Why should my organisation to run a Business Clean Up event?

A Business Clean Up is a great way to:

  • Make a difference by helping us deliver tangible environmental benefits
  • Be seen supporting your community and involve your staff, customers and stakeholders
  • Increase team cohesion via a low-cost team building exercise
  • Include your activity as part of your corporate social responsibility and sustainability goals

Why do businesses get charged a fee of $250+GST?

Clean Up Australia relies on the support of businesses to help provide free materials for community groups and schools.

We charge a $250 plus GST registration fee per Business Clean Up Event, which is payable at the time of registration.

What do I need to know when I register a site?

Prior to registering you will need to:

  • Think of a name for your site
  • Be able to define its location eg South side of Cooks River from Wardell Road to Illawarra Road
  • Pick a date and time range
  • Have your credit card handy (cost of business registration is $250 plus GST per site)
  • Identify a site supervisor for each group – have their name, mobile number and emergency contacts ready to enter
  • Decide if you can dispose of collected rubbish via your normal waste channels. If not, you will need to make alternative arrangements. Your local council may be able to help. Let us know if you need any help with this

How do I prepare?

  • Read our Event Guide and follow safety instructions in it
  • Inspect the site if you have not already done so. Identify any potential hazards
  • If you are expecting more than 10 volunteers, it is advisable to complete our Risk Assessment form to ensure you have considered all safety issues
  • Promote your Clean Up within your organisation
  • Check your COVID-19 safety arrangements

What does our Clean Up Kit include?

  • 10 x large bags (mix of bags for general rubbish and for recyclables)
  • 10 x pairs of gloves in two sizes
  • Hi-vis supervisor vest
  • Sharps container
  • Paperwork kit

Are there Safety precautions?

You will need to ensure that you follow the procedures outlined in the Site Guide. You will need the following documents from our resources section:

  • Volunteer Registration (we encourage the use of our QR Code Digital Registration rather than the paper form)
  • Risk Warning Poster
  • Accident and Incident Form
  • End of Clean up Report
  • Follow COVID-19 safe practices

What if I have more than 10 people?

Please note Clean Up groups are currently restricted to 10 people. However, you can  have up to 20 people participate at the one location by splitting your Clean Up into two groups of 10 and registering two sites separately. To qualify for this you will need to:

  • Have both activities on the same day
  • Have a different site supervisor for each group
  • Have both groups at essentially the same location – but they must remain distanced

This could be achieved by having the two groups Clean Up at different times, or starting from a different meeting place. If you wish to do this, register and pay for one site with a relevant site name – followed by “–Site A”, then register a second site with same name but add “-Site B”.

Do I need a big group in order to get involved?

Not at all! You can sign up as an individual or family and we’ll send you an appropriately sized kit.

Is there a cost involved?

No! Not for community members, schools or youth groups.  We ask that businesses pay a small fee to cover costs.

Need extra materials, caps, tees or more?

Shop the Clean Up Australia Store for team gear and Clean Up kit resources. All proceeds go towards supporting our environmental work and campaigns.

When is Clean Up Australia Day?

It’s always the first Sunday in March – so in 2026, the official Clean Up Australia Day will be Sunday 1 March. Our dedicated Schools Clean Up Day will be Friday 27 February and we urge businesses of all sizes to get involved on Business Clean Up Day on Tuesday 24 February 2026.

But the great news is you can organise a Clean Up for any day of the year!

We’ll still send you a free Clean Up kit because we we know Australia’s waste challenges can’t be solved in just one day.

Why do you want me to sign up – can’t I just get out there and do it?

Registering means you’re covered by Clean Up Australia’s public liability insurance – and can be counted as a participant. We want to be able to celebrate how many Aussies are Cleaning Up, fixing up and conserving the environment each year.

It also enables you to log what you collect and remove from the environment. Clean Up Australia has been keeping records for over 35 years now and tracking litter trends – our Litter Report FY24 reveals that plastics continue to dominate the Australian litter landscape, marking 81% of all surveyed litter.  Soft plastics and cigarette butts continue to be the most collected items! But our volunteers are reporting new menaces – like vapes (e-cigarettes), nangs (nitrous oxide bulbs) and face masks for example, so this data has proven to be an invaluable resource in identifying trends in the types and spread of litter throughout Australia.
