Every year, volunteers nationwide diligently count and log litter found at their Clean Up events. We love data – it feeds into our annual Litter Report, which is used to advocate for change as we work to prevent litter and waste. But manual counts can be tricky, particularly in poor weather, at the end of an impactful Clean Up!

The new Clean Up Cam web-app transforms how our volunteers report their litter collection. Instead of a manual count, volunteers can take photos of collected litter, and using AI identify and categorise litter types instantly. It’s a gamechanger!

The app improves reporting and strengthens environmental advocacy through improved data collection. At the end of your Clean Up, you’ll receive a report straight to your inbox with all the data on what you picked up.

USER GUIDE

We’ve created a user guide video to help walk you through each step of using Clean Up Cam at your own event.

FAQs

Do I need to download an app to access Clean Up Cam?

No, there is no need to download anything. Clean Up Cam is a mobile web-app which can be accessed in your internet browser via the URL www.cleanupcam.org.au. Your impact report will be sent to you via email.

Where do I find my event number?

Your event number is generated when your community Clean Up is registered on the Clean Up Australia website. If you’re an Event Supervisor, find it in your event confirmation email. If you’re a volunteer, ask your Event Supervisor and make a note of the number.

Is my data still valid with an incorrect event number?

Your data will still be counted. However, to receive your email summary report, volunteers need to have entered the same event number as the Event Supervisor.

What happens if I accidentally close Clean Up Cam after checking in?

Your check-in details and photos are saved. Navigate back to cleanupcam.org.au and you’ll be able to pick up where you left off.

Where are the photos of litter saved on my phone?

Photos taken while using Clean Up Cam are not saved on your phone; you won’t find them on your camera roll! Photos are held within the web-app and are uploaded to a server once you press Submit.

I’ve checked in and taken photos, but now I’ve lost mobile reception. What happens to the photos I have taken?

Photos are held in the phone browser’s memory for 24 hours. Please re-attempt to submit photos and conclude the event once you have mobile reception again. If 24 hours have passed, the photos will be discarded.

How many photos can I submit as part of a Clean Up?

Each volunteer who is using Clean Up Cam, including the Event Supervisor, can submit up to 30 photos.

What if I have more than 30 photos worth of litter?

That’s okay. A selection of up to 30 photos provides enough data for the tool to comfortably assess litter types and identify trends across Clean Ups.

How does AI know what litter is in the photos?

The AI tool has been trained in object detection and classification using photographs of litter in the environment. The AI tool in use is called Gemini Flash 2.5.

The email summary for the litter collected included items I didn’t collect. Where did these items come from?

The AI Output generated by the App may not always be error-free. The AI might produce some results which are incorrect under certain conditions such as poor image quality, unusual environmental features, or image obstructions. We strive to continually train and improve the AI tool.

I didn’t receive an email with the summary of the litter collected. Where can I find this?

The email is only sent when the event is concluded by the Event Supervisor. Please check your Junk folder if you did not receive the summary email. The email will come from Cleanup Australia ([email protected]) with the subject line Your Clean Up Summary. If you forgot to submit your data, you won’t receive a summary email.

Why do you collect my personal details?

We’ve tried to make this as painless as possible. But we do need to know certain details so you will be covered by our public liability insurance. Rest assured your data is safe with us.
