Clean Up the WORLD!

Did you know that Clean Up Australia inspired a global movement, Clean Up the World? Pretty awesome huh! In 2021, there’s thousands of activities happening in 43 different countries running mainly across this weekend, from Friday 17 September to Sunday 19 September!

Clean Up the World members register activities year-round through cleanuptheworld.org with a focus on Clean Up the World Weekend, which runs from Friday 17th September to Sunday 19th September 2021.

This year, registrations have increased slightly by 4% on 2020 participation. Latin America and the Caribbean region over doubled its participation from 2020 t0 2021. 

Clean Up the World members carry out a range of activities including rubbish clean ups, tree planting, education, awareness raising and habitat restoration.

There are many incredible Clean Up the World Members across the world who have carried out or will be conducting significant activities as part of Clean Up the World 2021.


Here are some highlights:

 

·        In Zaragoza, Spain, the Asociacion Fondo Natural will be collecting waste along a section of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Camino De Santiago pilgrimage trail, removing the accumulation of rubbish and debris from the natural environment.

 

·        In Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom, Sophia’s Clean Up Team will be picking up litter around the village of Little Chalfont, led by inspiring 6 year old Sophie Beecroft.

 

·        In Castelpoto, commune in the Province of Benevento, Italy, local group Circolo ARCI L'Agorà Castelpoto will clean up rubbish around the streets of their village, and try to inspire others to increase their respect of the local environment.

 

·        In the Leningrad region of Russia, the All-Russian Society of Nature Protection organise large-scale clean up projects, tree-planting and establishing eco-trails. Their project "Purinaemia-cultural value of Russia and Finland through the Mikael Agricola Trail" aims at enhancing the attractiveness of Finnish historical territory in Russia – Kurennieni by creating a new protected area.

 

·        In Paramaribo, Suriname, the Green Heritage Fund will be cleaning up the beach and surrounding indigenous village. Along this north-eastern coastline of South America, the sea carries a lot of waste onto the beach at Galibi, making it unhygienic and obstructing nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings. Clean up efforts will restore the natural habitat.

 

·        In Brazil, South America, the Olho D'água Surf and BodyBoard Association (ASBOA) will conduct many activities to clean up beaches and raise awareness, calling attention to the disposal of single use plastics. They will hold a surf competition at the same time, bringing together athletes, surfers and local beach cleaning groups.

 

·        Also in Brazil, Maria’s da Trilha will carry out plogging around Porto Alegre along the running trails, collecting rubbish and disposing of it properly.

 

·        In Lima, Peru, the Municipalidad Magdalena del Mar will carry out training on marine-coastal ecosystems along with a beach clean up and educational games.

 

·        In Miami Beach, Florida, USA, the Sanatura Yoga Group will collect trash and cigarette butts from the beaches around Miami Shores. The group will finish their activities with stretching and meditation, refreshments and conversations about environmental consciousness.

 

·        In Libya, North Africa, the Chlorophyll Association will organize an afforestation campaign targeting the southern area of the Green Mountain (Jabal al-Akhdar) for its importance. In coordination with the local community, Chlorophyll will plant around 250 native trees. The Green Mountain Forests are one of the unique types of forests noted for its abundance of distinctive flora, including the Phoenician tree, one of the most important, irreplaceable ingredient of land cover in the area.

 

·        In Cairo, Egypt, the Scouting for Peace Association will visit Wadi Elrian Protected Area and climb the mountain while cleaning up rubbish. There will also be a workshop about the area and a visit to a local museum.

 

·        In Johannesburg, South Africa, the Ebaleni Green Project will collect rubbish to clear space for urban farming and seed projects. The local youth from the Soccer Fields will get involved and organisers will hand out food parcels to thank everyone participating. Local artists will paint street trees with environmentally friendly messages.

 

·        In Abdalli, Jordan, 80 Jordanian NGOs will come together to volunteer and spread the idea of a clean planet by conducting awareness-raising workshops.

 

·        In Gujarat, India, local NGO, Shri M D Mehta Education Trust will raise awareness about the Festival of Holi to enjoy this colour festival without the use of chemical colours or excessive water and train the participants on making eco-friendly alternatives at home. The chemicals used enter water systems and impact on a nearby marine bird sanctuary as well as (one of India’s on five) Marine National Parks.

 

·        In Queensland, Australia, Petit Early Learning Journey will clean up in and around their childcare centre in Hamilton, while teaching the children to learn how to care for their surroundings.

 

·        In Laguna, Philippines, the Waste-At-Source Segregation (WASS) Project will carry out its webinar series organized by the Environmental Stewardship Committee under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs, University of the Philippines Los Banos. This webinar event will kick off the start of Clean Up the World Weekend and will be attended by UPLB students, faculty, REPS, and staff/aides in laboratory and research projects.
