About the project

The Great Barrier Reef Clean Up is delivered through Tangaroa Blue Foundation’s ReefClean program in collaboration with Clean Up Australia.

The ReefClean program was launched in 2019 and the project works to remove and prevent marine debris in the Great Barrier Reef region. The program is funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust.

Last year the Great Barrier Reef Clean Up saw more events than ever before, with hundreds of community volunteers claiming free Clean Up kits and getting out to lead activities in their local areas.

Our Role

Since joining the partnership in 2024, Clean Up Australia has played a key role in supporting the Great Barrier Reef Clean-up, mobilising communities, providing Clean Up kits, raising awareness, driving event registrations and supporting national data collection and reporting.

Program Timeline and Impact

2024: ReefClean secured renewed funding through Reef Trust, launching a further three-year program that builds on existing efforts across the Reef and its catchments.

2025: The program expanded its impact through increased community participation, Clean Up activity and data collection to better understand and reduce the flow of marine debris. It saw 2,646 volunteers come together across 153 community Clean Up events and record the collection of 47,255 marine debris items.

2026: This momentum continues, with the Great Barrier Reef Clean-up returning as a key annual event bringing communities together to take action. We want this one to be the biggest and best yet!
